Gaza Herald — In the heart of a city under relentless fire, Gaza’s medical workers are performing miracles against impossible odds. At al-Shifa Hospital, where the wounded pour in daily, doctors and nurses continue their work despite the constant sound of explosions and the risk that the next strike could be their last.
Dr. Saya Aziz, an Australian anesthesiologist who has been stationed at al-Shifa for less than a week, described a scene of staggering resilience. “The [staff] who have turned up are essentially risking their lives to come,” she said, explaining that only a skeletal team remains to treat thousands of patients. In just a few days, she has witnessed three separate bombings near the hospital.
One anesthetic assistant, she recalled, had walked four hours from southern Gaza just to reach the hospital. Despite having an injured foot from digging a tent for his displaced family, he worked a 24-hour shift without rest. “He couldn’t bring it upon himself to not come back,” Aziz said. “He told me, ‘If it wasn’t him, who is going to turn up for these patients?’ To him, every soul matters.”
Their commitment underscores a cruel reality: Gaza’s medical system, already decimated by Israeli bombardment, is being kept alive only by the courage of exhausted staff who work under constant threat of death.
In the face of collapsing infrastructure, shattered hospitals, and a siege that blocks medicine and fuel, Gaza’s doctors and nurses remain the last line of defense for a wounded and starving population. Their sacrifice is both a lifeline for their patients and a testament to Palestinian endurance under genocide.
