Gaza Herald- A recent report by the national media watchdog Fair revealed that major Western news outlets helped justify Israel’s killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. The report found that leading media organizations routinely “centered Israel’s narrative,” worked to “delegitimize pro-Palestinian sources,” and failed to place these killings within the wider context of what many describe as genocide.
Fair examined coverage in 15 well-known U.S.-based and international outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, BBC, and Reuters, after Israel’s targeted killing on August 10 of respected journalist Anas al-Sharif and five other Palestinian reporters. The study concluded that these outlets amplified Israeli talking points, including false accusations that Sharif was tied to Hamas, claims that the Committee publicly debunked to Protect Journalists, the Foreign Press Association, and the United Nations.
Silencing Palestinian Voices
Only nine of the fifteen outlets included Sharif’s own final words, written shortly before his death, warning that Israel was seeking to silence him. Instead, several outlets, including The New York Times, BBC, NBC, and Fox News, gave more weight to statements from Israeli officials, the very authorities responsible for the killings.
Fair also highlighted that just four publications, ABC, CNN, Politico, and The Wall Street Journal, reported that nearly 200 Palestinian journalists had been killed since October 7, 2023, with some sources estimating the number as high as 273. None of the outlets mentioned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces charges at the International Criminal Court for directing attacks on civilians.
Bias and Delegitimization of Palestinian Sources
The report further criticized Western media for routinely undermining Palestinian sources by adding phrases like “Hamas-run” before mentioning official institutions such as the Gaza Health Ministry. This tactic, used by outlets like the BBC, The New York Times, and Reuters, casts doubt on Palestinian casualty figures despite reputable sources, including The Lancet, confirming that those numbers were likely underreported.
In contrast, when reporting Israeli casualties, these same outlets rarely questioned the numbers or differentiated between combatants and civilians, reinforcing a double standard: Israeli deaths are treated with inherent credibility, while Palestinian deaths are met with suspicion and qualifiers.
By consistently framing Israel’s narrative as authoritative while marginalizing Palestinian voices, Western media have not only failed in their journalistic duty but also contributed to a culture of impunity. This selective reporting shields Israel from accountability in international forums, normalizes the killing of journalists, and undermines public understanding of the reality in Gaza. At a time when facts on the ground point to systematic targeting of civilians and press workers, the media’s role in echoing state propaganda becomes inseparable from the violence itself.
