Israel Kills 27 Children Daily in Gaza, Says UNICEF

Gaza Herald- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has sounded a grim alarm on the scale of child casualties in Gaza, stating that Israeli forces have been killing an average of 27 children every single day since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, UNICEF spokesman Khadem Khalaf emphasized that “nothing justifies Israel’s excessive killing of civilians in Gaza,” highlighting the devastating toll the conflict has taken on Gaza’s most vulnerable population.

UNICEF’s figures paint a harrowing picture: over 18,000 children have been killed since the offensive began, according to combined data from UNICEF, Gaza’s Government Media Office, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This death toll underscores the catastrophic impact of Israel’s sustained military campaign, which has entered its ninth month with no sign of abating.

The humanitarian crisis is not limited to direct casualties from bombardments. Khalaf revealed that over 5,000 children were diagnosed with acute malnutrition in Gaza during the month of May alone, a staggering figure that reflects the collapse of basic services under siege conditions.

Gaza has been subjected to a complete blockade, with Israeli authorities tightly restricting the entry of food, fuel, and medicine. As a result, even children who survive Israeli airstrikes face life-threatening hunger and disease. In June, at least 66 children died from malnutrition-related causes, a tragic outcome of the enforced deprivation.

UNICEF’s assessment aligns with broader warnings from international humanitarian agencies about the scale of the crisis in Gaza. With Israel maintaining strict control over crossings and severely limiting aid deliveries, the entire population, particularly children, has been left exposed to famine, disease, and relentless violence.

The Israeli offensive, launched after the events of October 7, has seen heavy bombardment of densely populated areas, including neighborhoods, hospitals, and schools. Rights organizations and UN bodies have repeatedly raised concerns about the proportionality of Israel’s military response and its disregard for civilian life.

The humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza comes amid increasing international scrutiny and calls for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life. Yet, despite these pleas, attacks continue and children remain among the primary victims.

UNICEF’s stark statistics highlight not only the human cost of this war but also the profound long-term impact on Gaza’s future. The scale of child deaths, injuries, displacement, and trauma ensures that this conflict will leave a lasting scar on an entire generation.

UNICEF and other UN agencies have urged the immediate lifting of the siege, the unimpeded entry of humanitarian assistance, and full protection of civilians under international humanitarian law. However, aid agencies say they face immense challenges delivering assistance amid ongoing military operations and restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities.

The figures cited by UNICEF, 27 children killed every day, more than 18,000 killed since the war’s outbreak, and thousands more suffering from malnutrition, reflect a level of destruction that has shocked the global conscience. As the conflict grinds on, Gaza’s children remain caught in the crossfire, paying the highest price for a war they did not choose.
