Israeli Strikes Kill at Least 48 in Gaza as Civilian Toll Soars

GAZA- Israeli forces intensified their assault on the Gaza Strip Sunday, killing at least 48 Palestinians in a series of deadly attacks across the besieged territory, just a day after 78 others were killed in a similar wave of airstrikes.

In one of the most devastating incidents, an Israeli airstrike targeted a residential home in Gaza City, killing at least 12 people, according to local sources. The bombardment comes amid continued Israeli offensives that have flattened entire neighborhoods and overwhelmed Gaza’s already collapsing healthcare system.

Medical sources at al-Shifa Hospital reported that six Palestinians were killed and many more wounded when Israeli forces bombed a shelter for displaced civilians at the Abu Asi School in Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp. Eyewitnesses said the attack struck as families, including children, were taking refuge inside classrooms. Children were reportedly among the dead.

In southern Gaza, Israeli fire near an aid distribution point close to Rafah killed three civilians, according to medical personnel at Nasser Hospital. The targeted area was a known location for humanitarian relief, raising further alarm over the growing number of strikes on aid convoys and shelters.

The latest attacks raise Sunday’s confirmed death toll to 48, including 36 in Gaza City alone, with dozens more wounded. The Palestinian Health Ministry said at least 80 bodies and 304 wounded people were brought to hospitals across the Strip in the last 24 hours. With emergency responders increasingly unable to reach the wounded due to ongoing strikes and infrastructure destruction, the actual toll is feared to be higher.

Total death toll raises

Since Israel ended a brief ceasefire on March 18, at least 6,860 Palestinians have been killed and over 24,220 wounded, according to Gaza’s health authorities.

The total death toll since the war began on October 7, 2023, now stands at a staggering 57,418 Palestinians killed and 136,261 wounded, with thousands more believed to be buried under the rubble of bombed-out buildings.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, international aid organizations continue to warn of a looming famine and total collapse of Gaza’s health system. Targeted attacks on shelters, schools, and aid points have drawn global condemnation, though efforts to implement a lasting ceasefire remain stalled.

Human rights groups have called for urgent international intervention to stop what many are calling a systematic campaign against a trapped civilian population.
