Assassinating the Sea: Israel’s Systematic War on Gaza’s Fishermen, Food Sovereignty, and Economic Survival

Gaza Herald_ For generations, the Mediterranean Sea served as the primary economic lifeline for the Gaza Strip, anchoring both its cultural identity and its local food supply. Over three years of unrelenting genocidal war, however, Israeli occupation forces have transformed the sea into a lethal exclusion zone where Palestinian fishermen are systematically hunted under direct fire, their vessels incinerated, and their access to food completely severed.

Beyond the immediate human toll, this targeted destruction constitutes a deliberate campaign of economic strangulation designed to eliminate Gaza’s capacity for self-sustenance, enforce total starvation, and dismantle an entire way of life.

A critical investigative report by the Protection for Human Rights Center, titled Boats Under Fire, details the catastrophic destruction inflicted on Gaza’s maritime sector between October 7, 2023, and October 2026. According to the document, Israeli naval and aerial forces have murdered 235 Palestinian fishermen, injured 143 others, including 16 critically injured, and forcibly abducted 130 fishermen while they attempted to practice their profession. The violence against these maritime workers is not an accidental consequence of military engagements, but a direct attempt to eliminate the skilled human labor that feeds tens of thousands of families and maintains Palestinian economic independence.

The structural dismantling of the fishing industry extends to every stage of production, turning the coast into a graveyard of equipment and maritime heritage. Israeli bombardments have pulverized or damaged 1,810 fishing vessels, including motorized launches, trawlers, and manual rowboats, leaving thousands of workers without the basic tools required to reach the water.

On shore, 270 out of Gaza’s 310 coastal fishing stations have been flattened, alongside essential processing infrastructure like ice production plants, desalination units, and repair shops. By systematically obliterating both the vessels at sea and the supporting facilities on land, the Israeli military has effectively dissolved an entire economic sector, ensuring that even if fishermen survive the shelling, they possess neither the equipment nor the ports required to resume their trade.

This comprehensive destruction is enforced through a strict “zero nautical mile” naval blockade maintained by continuous direct gunfire along the coastline, making fishing virtually impossible. By locking Palestinians out of their own waters, Israel has weaponized the sea as an engine of manufactured famine.

Depriving Gaza of its native seafood industry removes a critical source of protein at a moment when aid blockades have brought widespread starvation to the enclave. What was once a community’s greatest natural resource has been turned into a weapon of war, a closed front where casting a net carries the sentence of injury, abduction, or death, ensuring that the destruction of a livelihood becomes a primary instrument for suffocating an entire society.
