Gaza Herald _Israeli naval forces detained nine Palestinian fishermen on Tuesday after intercepting fishing boats operating off the coast of the Gaza Strip in two separate incidents near Deir al-Balah and Gaza City.
The arrests took place as fishermen were carrying out their daily work at sea, amid continued restrictions and security measures imposed on Gaza’s fishing sector.
Fishermen Forced to Stop Their Boats
Zakaria Bakr, head of Gaza’s fishermen committees, said Israeli gunboats pursued several fishing vessels before forcing them to halt in open waters.
According to Bakr, the detained fishermen were identified as Raed Mohammed Abu Rayala, Ayman Bahjat Abu Ouda, Mohammed Jihad Al-Soufi, Mahmoud Ismail Hajhouh, Zuhair Ahmed Al-Qaraan, Jumaa Mazen Al-Qaraan, Diaa Mazen Al-Qaraan, Ramadan Shaaban Abu Omar, and Nimer Mazen Al-Qaraan.
He said the fishermen were arrested after Israeli naval forces surrounded their boats and prevented them from continuing their work.
Gunfire and Pursuit Operations
Bakr reported that the incidents were accompanied by heavy gunfire and prolonged pursuit operations carried out by Israeli naval vessels.
He warned that such actions continue to place enormous pressure on Gaza’s fishing community, threatening one of the few remaining sources of income for hundreds of families already facing severe economic and humanitarian hardships.
Additional Losses at Sea
In a separate development, Bakr said fishermen also lost an illumination boat used at sea, suggesting that it may have been deliberately destroyed by Israeli naval forces.
If confirmed, the incident would add to the growing financial burden facing fishermen, who have already suffered repeated losses of equipment, vessels, and access to fishing areas.
Growing Concerns Over Fishing Restrictions
The latest incidents underscore the continuing restrictions imposed on Palestinian fishermen operating off Gaza’s coastline.
Human rights organizations and fishing unions have repeatedly called for an end to violations targeting fishermen and have urged respect for the right to work and access to maritime resources in accordance with international humanitarian law.
For many families in Gaza, fishing remains a critical source of livelihood, making each arrest, equipment loss, or restriction at sea another blow to communities already struggling to cope with the effects of war, displacement, and economic collapse.
