Israel Has Killed 263 Journalists in Gaza, Media Losses Reach $1 Billion

Gaza Herald – Israel has killed 263 Palestinian journalists and media workers during three years of its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, while the destruction of media institutions and equipment has caused an estimated $1 billion in losses, according to Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gaza’s Government Media Office.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, al-Thawabta said Israel’s attacks have inflicted an unprecedented human and material toll on Gaza’s press sector, killing journalists while they were reporting from one of the world’s most dangerous places for media workers and destroying much of the infrastructure needed to document events on the ground.

According to al-Thawabta, Israeli forces have detained 50 journalists during the war, 23 of whom remain in Israeli custody. Three other Palestinian journalists remain missing, leaving their families and colleagues without answers about their fate.

“Three journalists remain missing: Nidal Suheil al-Wahidi, Haitham Jamal Abdul Wahid and Ahmad Issam al-Agha,” al-Thawabta said.

The destruction has extended far beyond the killing and detention of journalists. Al-Thawabta said Israeli attacks damaged or destroyed the offices of 16 satellite television channels and 11 radio stations, severely affecting Gaza’s ability to maintain media coverage throughout three years of bombardment, displacement and humanitarian catastrophe.

Print and digital media organizations have also suffered extensive damage. According to the Government Media Office figures, Israeli attacks damaged or destroyed 12 newspaper and magazine offices, 23 digital media institutions and 27 printing houses. Five unions and rights organizations working in the media sector were also affected.

Al-Thawabta estimated the total material losses suffered by Gaza’s media sector at approximately $1 billion, including destroyed or damaged offices, cameras and other equipment, broadcast vehicles and technical devices essential to journalistic work.

The destruction has devastated a Palestinian media community already working under extraordinary conditions. Gaza’s journalists have continued documenting Israeli attacks, mass displacement, hunger and the destruction of entire neighborhoods while facing the same bombardment, displacement and deprivation as the population they cover.

The killing of 263 journalists and media workers over three years has also left Palestinian newsrooms without colleagues who spent years documenting life in Gaza and reporting the consequences of Israel’s blockade and repeated military assaults. At the same time, the destruction of offices, broadcasting facilities, printing houses and technical equipment has weakened the infrastructure through which Palestinian journalists can bring Gaza’s story to audiences outside the besieged territory.

For Gaza’s media community, the toll is therefore measured not only in destroyed equipment and financial losses, but in hundreds of journalists killed, detained or missing while Palestinian reporters continue working to document a genocide unfolding around them.
