Denying Dignity Beyond Death: The Weaponized Withholding of Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh’s Body

Gaza Herald _ More than two years after renowned Palestinian surgeon Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh was tortured to death in an Israeli prison, his grieving family remains trapped in an agonizing limbo, denied the basic human right to bury their loved one.

Facing the United Nations Human Rights Council during its 63rd session, his widow, Yasmeen Al-Bursh, delivered a powerful appeal on behalf of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, demanding that Israeli occupation authorities release her husband’s remains alongside the hundreds of other stolen Palestinian bodies held in Israeli morgues and military cemeteries.

Addressing the council, she exposed the systemic policy of withholding bodies as an intentional form of psychological torture designed to prolong the anguish of bereaved Palestinian families and deny them finality, closure, and sacred burial rituals.

Dr. Al-Bursh, the former head of orthopedics at Gaza’s principal Al-Shifa Hospital and one of the nation’s most respected medical professionals, became a symbol of steadfast commitment during Israel’s war on Gaza by steadfastly refusing to abandon his patients. Operating under relentless bombardment and siege, he moved endlessly between failing hospitals in Gaza City and northern Gaza to perform emergency surgeries on wounded civilians.

On December 19, 2023, Israeli forces abducted Dr. Al-Bursh while he was treating patients at Al-Awda Hospital, dragging him into an oppressive detention system where rights organizations and eyewitnesses confirm he was subjected to severe physical torture, sexual abuse, and humiliation.

On April 19, 2024, Israeli military officials formally confirmed that Dr. Al-Bursh had died under interrogation at Ofer Prison months earlier, yet they stubbornly refused to return his physical remains to his wife and children.

His case exposes the broader, routine Israeli policy of confiscating the bodies of slain Palestinians, a practice human rights defenders condemn as a grave violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. With over 1,700 Palestinian bodies currently retained in Israeli military custody, countless families are forced into an unending state of mourning, robbed of the dignity of a final farewell while the occupation regime weaponizes dead bodies as bargaining chips.
