Gaza Herald – A United Nations official has strongly criticized Israel’s newly approved law allowing the execution of Palestinian detainees, describing it as discriminatory and calling for its immediate reversal.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reaffirmed that the organization’s position is clear in opposing the death penalty in all circumstances. He stressed that the discriminatory nature of the law makes it particularly harsh and unjust, urging the Israeli government not to implement it.
Dujarric also cited data from the United Nations Development Programme warning that ongoing military escalation in the region could lead to a regional economic contraction ranging between 3.7% and 6% of GDP, with potential losses reaching up to $294 billion. The report also warned of rising unemployment, the loss of millions of jobs, and an increase in poverty levels affecting millions more.
Regarding Gaza, he noted that humanitarian efforts were ongoing despite major obstacles, including the evacuation of patients for treatment abroad and the return of children through the Rafah crossing. He emphasized the need to ensure safe and dignified movement for civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.
He also warned of worsening health conditions in Gaza, including the spread of skin diseases such as scabies and increased rodent infestations in overcrowded shelters, largely due to shortages of hygiene supplies and pest control resources.
On Lebanon, Dujarric expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation amid ongoing cross-border exchanges of fire, noting that the number of internally displaced people has surpassed 1.1 million. He stressed the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and protecting civilians and critical infrastructure.
He further reiterated that Lebanon must not become another Gaza, emphasizing the need to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
