Gaza Herald – The United Nations World Food Programme warned on Monday that Gaza was once again at risk of sliding into catastrophic levels of hunger, despite an expansion of humanitarian operations more than 100 days into the ceasefire. The agency said the current situation remained extremely fragile and vulnerable to rapid collapse.
The WFP reported that life-saving food assistance had been reaching more than one million people each month across Gaza, marking a critical expansion aimed at easing the humanitarian crisis. While this scale-up helped push back the immediate threat of famine, the agency stressed that gains remained precarious.
According to the WFP, sustained humanitarian access through all crossings, uninterrupted flows of aid and commercial goods, and the continuation of the ceasefire were decisive factors in preventing a renewed descent into mass hunger and acute food insecurity. Any disruption, it warned, could swiftly unravel months of relief efforts and return conditions to crisis levels.
Since October 7, 2023, Gaza has endured widespread devastation marked by mass displacement, the collapse of basic services, and severe food shortages. International agencies have repeatedly cautioned that prolonged restrictions, coupled with ongoing instability, have left millions facing extreme deprivation, with children bearing the heaviest burden of hunger and malnutrition.
