Waed: Alarming Deterioration in the Conditions of Child Detainees in Israeli Prisons

Gaza Herald —The Waed Association for Prisoners and Freed Prisoners has warned of a rapidly worsening situation facing Palestinian child detainees held in Israeli prisons, stressing that the treatment they are subjected to constitutes a flagrant violation of all international conventions related to the rights of the child.

In a statement issued today, Waed said that detained children are enduring harsh and inhumane conditions, including deprivation of adequate clothing and blankets, poor nutrition, and severe overcrowding. These conditions are compounded by deliberate medical neglect, which has had serious consequences for both their physical and psychological health.

Spread of Disease and Medical Neglect

The association also reported the spread of infectious diseases among child detainees due to the absence of basic hygiene standards and proper healthcare, noting that necessary medications and regular medical follow-up are largely unavailable.

Systematic Abuse and Calls for Accountability

Waed emphasized that these practices amount to a form of systematic torture, particularly when inflicted on children. The association held Israeli occupation forces fully responsible for the safety and lives of detained children, and called on international and human rights institutions to uphold their legal and moral obligations by taking urgent action to protect child prisoners and bring an end to ongoing violations against them.
