UN Warns of Total Development Collapse in Gaza Due to Genocide

Gaza Herald- Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Palestine, reported that the devastation caused by the Israeli war on Gaza is unprecedented.

According to Albanese in a new UN report, 69 years of human development, including education and healthcare systems, infrastructure, and banks, have been destroyed by the Israeli war on Gaza.

The UN rapporteur shared a UNCTAD report highlighting the devastating economic, humanitarian, environmental, and social crises Palestine has faced due to the Israeli war launched on October 7, 2023, which has wiped out decades of development.

On Tuesday, Albanese tweeted, “This is not a war but a genocide,” highlighting Gaza’s economic collapse, which she described as the most severe and unprecedented in history.

Gaza’s economic output plummeted by 87 percent between 2023 and 2024, slashing the per capita share of the local product to just $161, the lowest level recorded globally, according to the report.

The UN agency stated that the Israeli war has destroyed Gaza’s essential lifelines, food, shelter, and healthcare, pushing the territory to the brink of total collapse.

The report added that the economic crisis in Gaza ranks among the ten worst global economic crises since 1960.

The recovery of Gaza could take decades, with the territory remaining reliant on intensive international support, and reconstruction projected to cost over $70 billion.
