Gaza Herald – A Palestinian child from Al-Astal family was killed in Khan Younis after a leftover Israeli explosive detonated on Saturday, according to medical teams at Nasser Hospital. The incident underscores the ongoing danger facing families returning to destroyed neighborhoods amid the genocide.
Rights groups warn that Gaza has become a massive, unmapped minefield. The Gaza Center for Human Rights estimates more than 20,000 unexploded Israeli bombs, rockets, and shells remain scattered across residential areas, roads, farmland, and schoolyards.
Humanitarian organizations, including Handicap International, say the situation poses a “lethal threat” to displaced families, particularly children who often encounter the hidden explosives among rubble. They stress the urgent need to allow specialized demining equipment and teams into the Strip, access that Israel continues to block.
UN demining experts estimate that 5-10% of Israeli munitions failed to detonate, with the real number now likely far higher after continuous bombardment. Relief agencies warn that clearing Gaza of unexploded ordnance could take 20 to 30 years, leaving the population to live and die amid a field of buried fire.
