Gaza Herald – The United Nations Human Rights Office said on Sunday that the Gaza Strip has become the most dangerous place in the world for journalists amid the ongoing Israeli genocide.
The statement was issued in a post marking World Press Freedom Day, observed each year on May 3, highlighting the severe risks faced by media workers in the enclave.
The UN body called on governments worldwide to move beyond statements of condemnation and solidarity, urging concrete measures to ensure accountability, provide protection for journalists, and allow independent access for international media into Gaza.
For his part, Volker Türk described the war in Gaza as a deadly trap for the media, noting that his office has verified the killing of around 300 journalists since October 2023, in addition to many more who have been injured in the Israeli attacks.
The remarks underscore growing international concern over press safety in war zones and renewed calls for enforceable protections for journalists on the ground.
