Gaza Herald – On World Press Freedom Day, Gaza’s Government Media Office revealed that Palestinian journalists are facing an “unprecedented catastrophic reality” amid the ongoing Israeli genocide, which has turned journalism into a “mission fraught with death.”
In a press statement, the office reported that 262 journalists and media workers have been killed since the beginning of the genocide, one of the highest recorded death tolls of journalists in any war worldwide. It described this as evidence of a “systematic policy aimed at silencing the Palestinian voice and preventing the transmission of truth.”
The statement added that 50 journalists have been detained under harsh conditions, while 3 others remain missing, raising serious concerns about their fate. More than 420 journalists have also been injured, including severe cases resulting in amputations and permanent disabilities.
According to the statement, these violations constitute a blatant breach of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, and amount to war crimes that require international accountability.
The Government Media Office held Israeli occupation fully responsible for the targeting, killing, and detention of journalists, and accused several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France, of providing political and military cover for these actions.
It also warned that international silence over such violations represents a serious undermining of the global justice system, calling on the International Federation of Journalists and the Arab Journalists Union, along with other media and human rights institutions, to take immediate action to halt the targeting of journalists in Gaza.
The statement further urged the provision of urgent international protection for media workers and called for those responsible to be prosecuted before international courts.
It concluded by describing the situation as a “systematic attempt to assassinate the truth,” affirming that Palestinian journalists will continue their mission despite the risks, and that “the voice of Palestine will not be silenced.”
