Severe Bread Shortage in Gaza as Daily Deficit Reaches 170,000 Loaves

Gaza Herald – Gaza’s Ministry of Economy has warned of a deepening food supply crisis, revealing a severe shortage in bread availability across the Strip.

Deputy Economy Minister Hassan Abu Rayala stated on Thursday that the daily deficit in bread has reached approximately 170,000 bundles. He explained that while the population needs around 300,000 bundles per day, only about 130,000 are currently being produced and distributed.

Speaking during a meeting with community leaders and local representatives in Gaza Governorate, Abu Rayala said ministry teams are working around the clock to stabilize food security and prevent market panic, with field units deployed across the Strip to monitor and regulate prices.

He also highlighted additional shortages affecting essential goods, including vehicle oils and A4 printing paper, indicating that the supply crisis extends beyond food items.

The ministry, he added, is implementing a weekly action plan in coordination with partners, including issuing price guidance lists twice a week to limit market manipulation.

Abu Rayala noted that more than 90% of factories in Gaza have been destroyed during the genocide, significantly reducing local production capacity and worsening supply shortages.

Efforts are currently focused on directing traders toward importing essential goods to help meet the population’s basic needs amid the ongoing crisis.
