Gaza Herald – Gaza is facing unprecedented destruction after two years of relentless Israeli bombardment, with UNICEF reporting that 9 out of 10 homes have been either damaged or destroyed. The catastrophic toll has left hundreds of thousands of Palestinians homeless, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.
The scale of devastation is staggering. According to the United Nations and World Bank assessments, more than 245,000 residential units were destroyed or damaged, generating over 50 million tons of rubble. Experts warn that clearing debris alone could take 10 to 15 years, delaying the return of displaced families and reconstruction of critical infrastructure.
Key sectors of Gaza’s society have been shattered. Schools, universities, and healthcare facilities suffered massive damage, with approximately 87% of schools and all universities affected, and 84% of health facilities either destroyed or rendered inoperable. Water, sanitation, and electricity networks were also decimated, leaving millions without access to essential services.
The economic and social toll is equally severe. Gaza’s economy has been paralyzed by the destruction of factories, businesses, and livelihoods. Humanitarian agencies stress that immediate relief and reconstruction require tens of billions of dollars, not only to rebuild homes but also to restore healthcare, education, and public services vital for the survival of the population.
