Gaza Herald- A Palestinian prisoner from Gaza, reportedly in his 40s, died under suspicious circumstances while in the custody of Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet. Israeli authorities have claimed the man “fell from a height” during interrogation, even though he was handcuffed at the time.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the death occurred in January 2024 but was concealed by Israeli authorities, and the man’s identity has been withheld. The official narrative suggests he fell while trying to escape an account widely viewed as implausible, given that his hands were bound.
An autopsy found injuries consistent with a high fall and marks indicating the detainee had been shackled for a prolonged period. Nevertheless, Israel’s justice ministry hastily closed the investigation, declaring there was no suspicion of foul play. Haaretz pointed out that, at the very least, the case reflects serious negligence on the part of the Shin Bet, which has refused to comment publicly.
This incident is not isolated. Since Israel launched its brutal war on Gaza in October 2023, at least six Palestinians have died during Shin Bet interrogations. Investigations into these deaths have been superficial at best, with most cases closed without accountability. Israeli authorities rely on secretive procedures and internal forensic reports to shield Shin Bet agents from legal consequences.
Israeli intelligence agencies have also withheld information on Palestinian detainees who have died in custody. These deaths many shrouded in silence are part of a disturbing pattern of systematic abuse, enforced disappearances, and institutionalized impunity.
In one previously concealed case, Haaretz revealed the killing of Dr. Iyad al-Rantisi, the director of the women’s hospital in Beit Lahiya. Dr. Rantisi died in Israel’s Shikma prison just six days after his arrest in November 2023. His family was never notified; they learned of his death through the media. Although authorities claimed he suffered a heart attack, bruises on his body raised grave suspicions of torture. No criminal proceedings followed.
In another recent tragedy, 20-year-old Ahmad Saeed Saleh Tazazeh died in Megiddo prison while being held under Israel’s repressive administrative detention policy, which allows imprisonment without charge or trial. Rights groups have highlighted the inhumane conditions in Megiddo, including the spread of untreated scabies infections allegedly used as a form of biological abuse. Tazazeh had been detained since May 6, and no clear information has been provided about the cause of his death.
76 prisoners died behind Israeli bars
According to the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club, at least 76 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody since the start of the war in Gaza. These figures account only for confirmed deaths with known identities; dozens more remain forcibly disappeared.
Since 1967, no fewer than 313 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli prisons. Human rights groups warn that the growing number of deaths reflects a deliberate policy of “slow execution” carried out by the Israeli prison system through torture, starvation, medical neglect, and isolation.
As the world remains largely silent, Palestinians continue to suffer in darkness, abused, buried without names, and denied the most basic of rights. Not a single month passes without the tragic announcement of yet another Palestinian life lost behind Israeli bars.
