Israeli Drone Strike Hits Crowded Market in Gaza City, Kills 12

Gaza Herald— A deadly Israeli drone strike has targeted a busy market in Gaza City, killing at least 12 Palestinians and injuring many others, according to field reports from our correspondents on the ground.

Among those killed was Dr. Ahmad Qandeel, a general surgery consultant at al-Ahli Arab Hospital, who was reportedly near the market at the time of the strike. Emergency teams are still working to retrieve victims from the site amid fears the death toll could rise.

Dr. Munir al-Bursh, Director General of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, described Dr. Qandeel as “one of the most esteemed doctors in Gaza,” noting that he remained committed to his people and his profession. “He stayed in his homeland to treat the wounded. He never left, never turned his back on his mission,” al-Bursh said.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 1,588 healthcare workers have lost their lives in Israeli attacks since the beginning of what they describe as a continuing genocide.

The toll includes doctors, nurses, medical technicians, destroyed ambulances, and incidents of detention. Reports indicate that over 1,400 medical personnel have been killed, while around 160 remain imprisoned by Israeli forces, among them more than 20 doctors. Some detainees have reportedly been subjected to brutal assaults and torture.

In May 2024 alone, approximately 500 healthcare workers were killed since October 7 of the previous year, alongside about 360 arrests and the destruction of more than 130 ambulances.
