Gaza Herald – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recorded the highest monthly tally of settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank during last October. The agency stated that its data reflects 397 incidents throughout the month, marking the most severe figure since the organization began documenting such violations in 2006.
The UN office clarified in a report published on Sunday that this total does not include attacks occurring during the final five days of the month. It further noted the documentation of 62 additional attacks between October 20 and 26, which targeted 49 Palestinian communities across various regions of the West Bank.
The report highlighted a direct link between 38 of these attacks and the olive harvest season. This period is characterized by an escalation in violence against farmers and their agricultural lands, as settlers increasingly target those working the fields during the critical harvesting window.
During the specified week, the UN documented injuries to 57 Palestinians, including nine children. Of those injured, 23 were hurt as a result of settler assaults. The remaining 34 sustained injuries from Israeli occupation forces and their operations in scattered areas of the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem.
In response to the rising tide of settler violence coinciding with the olive harvest, Amnesty International called on the international community last month to impose sanctions on Israeli officials implicated in breaches of international law. The organization urged immediate action to halt the escalating attacks against Palestinians, particularly farmers and landowners.
The UN office emphasized that the documented figures represent a significant increase in violence compared to previous years. The data underscores the persistent insecurity faced by Palestinian communities in the region, where settler activities continue to disrupt daily life and economic livelihoods without adequate intervention.
The report detailed that the attacks varied in nature, ranging from physical assaults to property damage. The involvement of security forces in some incidents further complicated the situation for residents, who face threats from multiple sources during the harvest season.
Amnesty International’s demands for accountability reflect growing concern among human rights organizations regarding the impunity enjoyed by many perpetrators of violence in the occupied territories. The call for sanctions aims to pressure the Israeli government to enforce laws protecting Palestinian civilians.
The UN office reiterated its commitment to monitoring the situation closely. It indicated that future reports will continue to track the frequency and severity of incidents, providing a comprehensive overview of the humanitarian impact on local populations.
The findings contribute to a broader understanding of the challenges facing the West Bank. They highlight the urgent need for international mechanisms to address systemic issues contributing to the cycle of violence and displacement.
