Gaza Herald –Israel continues to forcibly disappear thousands of Palestinians from Gaza, with many detainees still cut off from their families, lawyers and human rights groups, Palestinian prisoners’ rights organizations revealed on International Enforced Disappearances Day
The organizations said the practice has left families without basic information about whether their loved ones are alive, where they are being held, or what condition they are in. They warned that the lack of legal and international oversight creates conditions in which torture, abuse and medical neglect can take place without accountability.
The groups said Israel has used military detention frameworks, including the designation of Gazans as “unlawful combatants,” alongside detention camps and restrictions on access by lawyers and the International Committee of the Red Cross. They said there is still no comprehensive figure for the number of Gazans who have been forcibly disappeared.
According to figures cited by the organizations, 1,358 detainees were classified by Israel as “unlawful combatants” as of early August 2026. They also said the identities of 53 of the 99 Gaza detainees who reportedly died in Israeli custody after the Israeli genocide began have been established.
The organizations further raised concerns over Palestinians who died in Israeli detention and whose bodies remain withheld. They said the continued refusal to return bodies to families prevents relatives from learning the circumstances of their loved ones’ deaths and from giving them a dignified burial.
They called on the United Nations and the international community to demand immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of disappeared detainees, ensure access for lawyers and international monitors, investigate reports of torture and deaths in custody, and hold those responsible accountable.
For families in Gaza, the uncertainty is itself another form of suffering: years can pass without knowing where a son, father, husband or brother is being held, or whether he is still alive.
