Gaza Herald – Amnesty International is calling for the immediate release of Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, who has now spent 600 days in Israeli custody without formal charges or trial.
As director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Abu Safiya became widely known for continuing to treat wounded civilians and children throughout Israel’s genocide on Gaza, even as the healthcare system collapsed around him.
His detention has drawn international condemnation from human rights organizations, which have raised concerns over his prolonged imprisonment without trial and the lack of transparency surrounding his legal status. His continued detention has also kept him separated from his family, medical colleagues, and the children he dedicated his life to treating.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s case has become emblematic of broader concerns surrounding Palestinian detainees held by Israel. Palestinian prisoners’ rights groups say thousands of Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons and detention facilities, including people held without trial under administrative detention, while detainees from Gaza have faced particularly severe restrictions on family contact, legal access, and information about their whereabouts.
Human rights organizations have also documented reports of harsh detention conditions and abuse against Palestinian detainees, including prolonged isolation, inadequate medical care, and mistreatment. Rights groups continue to call for independent investigations, due process, and the release of detainees held without lawful grounds.
