Gaza Herald – Amal Nash’at Abu Khater was just 10 years old when she sat inside her family’s tent near Hamad City, north of Khan Younis, eating lunch with her relatives. Suddenly, a bullet fired by Israeli forces struck her in the back, killing her before she could reach Nasser Medical Complex.
For Amal’s family, the horror is impossible to comprehend. She was not carrying a weapon or taking part in any fighting. She was a child eating a meal inside a displacement camp.
Her uncle, Nidal Abu Khater, said the area where Amal was staying was designated as a “humanitarian area” and posed no threat to Israeli forces. “She was just sitting there. Why did they kill her?” he asked, grieving the loss of his brother’s only daughter.
Amal had spent her childhood trying to preserve a sense of normal life amid genocide and displacement. She had memorized three chapters of the Quran and was working on a fourth at a nearby Quran memorization center. Her family remembers her as a child devoted to learning, faith, and her family, a life cut short by a single bullet.
Her grandmother, Samira Abu Labda, recalled the moment everything changed. Amal had been eating and playing with her young uncle when gunfire rang out. When the family looked at her, blood was pouring from her back.
“What did this child ever do?” her grandmother asked through her grief. “She was memorizing the Quran and going to learn it.”
The family says Israeli gunfire has repeatedly targeted the area around Hamad City and its eastern outskirts, where displaced Palestinians continue to live under precarious conditions. Amal’s grandfather, Hassan Abu Labda, said the family was about a kilometer from the so-called Yellow Line and questioned how the killing of a child inside a displacement tent could be justified.
Amal’s death adds another name to the devastating toll paid by Palestinian children in Gaza. She was not simply a statistic: she was a daughter, granddaughter and student with dreams that were still taking shape.
Her final meal became her family’s final memory of her alive.
A child sat down to eat. A bullet ended her life. And once again, a Palestinian family is left asking why the world allowed it to happen.
