UN Warns Expanding Israeli Buffer Zones, Ongoing Attacks Threaten Gaza’s Farmers

Gaza Herald — Palestinian farmers across the Gaza Strip face escalating hazards as they attempt to access their agricultural lands, with vital farming territory increasingly seized and restricted by Israeli military forces, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned.

The UN agricultural agency reported that the Israeli military-controlled demarcation zone, known as the “Yellow Line”, continues to expand further west into Gaza. This deliberate encroachment steals prime arable land, cuts off rural families from their traditional livelihoods, and prevents Palestinian farmers from planting essential new seasonal crops needed to feed the blockaded population.

Over 340 Children Killed Despite Ceasefire Agreement

Concurrently, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that more than 340 Palestinian children have been killed and hundreds more injured in Gaza in the year following the nominal ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires emphasized that the ongoing deaths offered zero comfort to grieving Palestinian families living under continuous military assault.

“For families mourning the loss of their children, those terrible statistics do not equate with a ceasefire,” Pires stated during a press briefing.

Pires revealed that within the last fortnight alone, despite the declared truce, Israeli airstrikes, drone strikes, and direct gunfire killed five young boys and two girls across the territory, while at least 33 children suffered severe, life-altering injuries. Two additional boys recently succumbed to wounds inflicted during previous Israeli bombardments.

The findings from both UN agencies underscore a grim reality across Gaza: while expanding military buffer zones systematically dismantle the enclave’s remaining food production capacity, ongoing strikes continue to claim young lives, exposing the fragility of the ceasefire and the persistent dangers facing Palestinian civilians.
