Ceasefire Under Fire: Israel Launches New Strikes in Southern Gaza

Gaza Herald – After a brief and fragile calm, the sounds of explosions once again echoed through Gaza’s southern skies on Sunday. The ceasefire, which had given millions a short-lived sense of relief, was quickly broken by Israeli airstrikes, the latest in a cycle of violence that continues to devastate the enclave.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it launched a “series of strikes” against Hamas targets in southern Gaza, claiming the action was in response to what it called a “blatant violation” of the truce. The military said its troops had come under fire in Rafah, near the designated withdrawal zone, prompting immediate retaliation.

Hamas officials, however, denied knowledge of any clashes, suggesting that Israel’s move was a deliberate provocation aimed at undermining the ceasefire and justifying continued aggression.

A senior Israeli military spokesperson later told reporters that further strikes could follow throughout the day “if necessary,” signaling that the truce could soon collapse entirely.

The renewed violence comes at a time when Gaza’s residents, already reeling from months of bombardment, are struggling to rebuild what little remains of their homes and lives. Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that any escalation could further delay vital aid deliveries and deepen the existing crisis, especially in Gaza’s southern region, where tens of thousands have taken refuge.

In neighborhoods already reduced to rubble, displaced families are now living under renewed fear, uncertain whether the ceasefire that once promised a pause from the bloodshed will ever truly hold.
