Amid Destruction, Gaza Teachers Struggle to Keep Education Alive

Gaza Herald – As another school year begins under the shadow of war, a few dedicated teachers in Gaza are finding ways to keep education alive despite the destruction, displacement, and daily hardships facing families across the territory.

Ten-year-old Lama Deeb was among the few children lining up to attend class in Gaza City for the first time in nearly two years.

“My mother registered us at this camp. It’s a good chance for us to get an education because almost all the schools and houses have been destroyed by the Israelis,” she said.

The school’s principal, Wafa Shubeir, recalled how students once began the school year with new uniforms, school bags, and notebooks. Now, she said, children arrive with none of these essentials because families have no money and no shops are left to buy supplies from.

Jawad Khaleel, Gaza’s western education director, explained that many children cannot attend at all because they live too far away, there is no transportation. Ongoing displacement keeps families constantly on the move.

Despite the challenges, teachers and students continue to cling to education as a symbol of hope and normalcy in the midst of war, determined to keep learning alive even in the most difficult circumstances.
