Detained Doctor Abu Safiya in Critical Condition, Lawyer Says

Gaza Herald- Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, has witnessed a serious health deterioration in Israeli detention, his lawyer said in a statement on social media.

Israeli forces arrested Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, on 27 December from the hospital in Beit Lahia in north Gaza, which was left out of service following Israeli attacks.

All medical staff, patients, and their relatives were taken out of the hospital at gunpoint and forced to strip down to their underwear.

Remaining in solitary confinement, Abu Safiya has lost more than 40kg since his arrest and was reportedly beaten on 24 June, his lawyer said. Abu Safia, who had documented the cruel impact of Israel’s offensive on Kamal Adwan Hospital, was arrested after refusing multiple military threats to leave the hospital during a devastating blockade on the northern Gaza Strip.

The doctor was reportedly sighted back last December by two released prisoners at Sde Teiman, a controversial facility known for its extreme abuse of detainees.

The doctor was one of hundreds of medical workers taken from Gaza by Israeli forces to the notorious Sde Teiman detention camp and other Israeli military prisons.
