Gaza Herald — At least 127 Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip have only recently learned that their sons are alive inside Israeli military detention centers, after long believing they were killed during Israeli bombardments or remained buried beneath the rubble. The revelation, made public by a human rights organization on Thursday, exposes Israel’s systematic policy of enforced disappearance aimed at psychologically tormenting civilian populations under siege.
According to the Palestinian Center for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recently received an initial list containing the names of over 8,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli facilities, including 828 individuals confirmed from the Gaza Strip. Subsequent phone calls conducted by the ICRC to notify next-of-kin revealed that over a hundred families had spent months, or even years, mourning loved ones whom Israeli occupation forces had secretly abducted and subjected to total communication blackouts.
“Psychological Torture”: Weaponizing Enforced Disappearance Against Families
Rights advocates argue that concealing the fate and whereabouts of Palestinian captives constitutes a deliberate campaign of collective punishment and psychological warfare against Gaza’s civilian population.
“These findings prove the existence of a systematic crime of enforced disappearance,” the center stated, emphasizing that hundreds of Gaza families continue to grieve relatives who are currently being held in secret military camps and prisons across Israel.
The organization warned that the list disclosed to the ICRC remains drastically incomplete. Documented field estimates indicate that between 2,500 and 3,000 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have been forcibly disappeared by Israeli forces since October 7, 2023, without formal charges, trial, or external legal representation.
Total Incommunicado Detention and Violation of International Law
Under international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, the concealment of a detainee’s status and location is strictly prohibited, violating the fundamental right of families to know the fate of their missing relatives.
By enforcing total media blackouts, barring independent human rights monitors, and prohibiting visits from both lawyers and the Red Cross, Israeli occupation authorities have effectively transformed detention centers into black sites. The rights center held Israeli authorities fully responsible for the lives and physical safety of all captives, calling on the United Nations and the international community to demand immediate, unhindered access to all facilities where Palestinians are held incommunicado.
