Gaza Herald – The health condition of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya has significantly worsened during his detention in Israeli custody, following repeated assaults and prolonged solitary confinement, according to the Asra Media Office (AMO).
The prisoner advocacy group said Abu Safiya is being held under extremely difficult conditions at Rakevet Prison, where he has suffered rib fractures and a serious decline in his overall health after multiple attacks by prison authorities.
AMO reported that the most severe incident occurred on July 27, stressing that it is the “harshest” day Abu Safiya has experienced since his detention. Prison guards used batons, stun devices, tear gas, rubber bullets, and attack dogs during a crackdown on prisoners.
The office said Abu Safiya is currently suffering from several medical conditions, including heart problems, high blood pressure, severe neck pain, a herniated disc, a hernia, vision problems, persistent dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.
Despite the severity of his condition, AMO said prison authorities have limited his treatment to painkillers and blood-pressure medication, without providing adequate medical care.
According to the group, Abu Safiya was assaulted shortly after his transfer to Rakevet Prison on June 24, 2026, where guards allegedly beat him with batons, causing a rib fracture. His condition was further aggravated by repeated assaults and 21 days of solitary confinement under harsh conditions.
AMO called for urgent international intervention to address the ongoing abuses against Palestinian prisoners, demanding protection, accountability, and the release of detainees facing severe health risks.
