Gaza Herald _Newly elected Hamas Political Bureau chief Khalil Al-Hayya said Monday that the Movement will continue working with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to strengthen the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and advance negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Al-Hayya made the remarks after receiving a phone call from Hassan Rashad, head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, who congratulated him on his election as Hamas’ new political leader.
Earlier Monday, Hamas announced Al-Hayya’s election as head of its Political Bureau, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during clashes with Israeli forces in Rafah, southern Gaza, in October 2024.
In a statement, Hamas said Rashad congratulated Al-Hayya on the confidence placed in him by the Movement’s leadership following his election.
Al-Hayya thanked the Egyptian intelligence chief for the call and reaffirmed what he described as Egypt’s longstanding role in the Palestinian cause, particularly its efforts to mediate negotiations aimed at reinforcing the Gaza ceasefire and advancing the second phase of the agreement.
He added that Hamas would continue coordinating with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to support mediation efforts, end the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, secure an Israeli withdrawal from the Strip, and facilitate reconstruction.
The Gaza ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, under an agreement brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey with U.S. backing. The deal outlined a two-phase framework intended to halt hostilities.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Israel has continued military attacks despite the agreement. As of Monday, those attacks had killed 1,158 Palestinians and injured 3,756 others since the ceasefire began.
On June 8, 2026, mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey met with Palestinian factions in Cairo to discuss a roadmap for implementing the remaining provisions of the ceasefire agreement and advancing negotiations on its second phase.
